The Ethnographic I by Carolyn Ellis, to me, is an interesting piece of literature and I have learned a lot from it. It is part textbook, part novel. It is a story about experiences, but at the same time it teaches about ethnography and auto-ethnography.
"This semester, I learned a lot about different medias and genres, and also writing from a more personal perspective, while still also maintaining a scholarly approach. In my past English classes, we mainly focused on writing traditional 5 paragraph essays. I believe this is an important skill, but I was excited to learn a new skill in my first semester of college. And in doing this, I also learned that there is a certain importance in capturing this other viewpoint. It reaches different audiences, and fits more in with our evolving society.
In addition to this, I thought the subject of auto-ethnography, which was something I had never experienced either before this course, was paired perfectly with this exploration of multimedia and new genres. It not only gave me and other students a new perspective on English and scholarly writing, but also a whole new lens i we can use to approach writing in the future."
